In East Salinas, the Cesar Chavez Library is packed with children and families after school doing homework, attending programs, receiving tutoring, reading and playing educational games. Families there are taking advantage of the resources that we know help our community members achieve the American dream. Computer, science and art classes and other enrichment programs provide the foundation for children to succeed in school and prepare for brighter futures. In North Salinas, families do not have the same opportunities in the small El Gabilan Library. Because of your input, plans are underway to change that!

We've listened! Over the past year, with the help of the architectural firm, Anderson Brule, and through a Master Plan process for the Library, Parks and Recreation Department, we've listened to thousands of community members who have expressed their desire for more resources for families in the neighborhoods surrounding El Gabilan Library.  For children and teens, the new 21,000 square foot library will provide an experience designed to capture the imagination and inspire a love of lifelong learning, including:
  • Space for more books, music and videos. The new children's area alone will be even larger than the current library!
  • Dedicated space for children's story times and playgroups to start young children on the right path for entering kindergarten, and for reading on grade level by third grade.
  • A separate space for teens allowing for studying in small groups and receiving help with homework, as well as just providing a safe space for teens to socialize and to access arts and technology resources.
  • An outdoor learning and play space to connect children with nature and the environment.
  • A makerspace and digital arts lab offering classes that will connect teens (and adults too!) to careers in technology and the arts.
  • A large community room and outdoor program space where families can attend programs, concerts and celebrations together!
Stay tuned and we'll provide information shortly on what the new library will offer for adults! We hope you'll continue to give us your input on the plan. Final financial decisions will be on the agenda regarding the El Gabilan Library at the City Council meeting on May 15th. We welcome the public to attend. Please explore these renderings and share with us on Facebook your ideas about the final design for El Gabilan and on the future of our community.
