The Salinas Public Library offers multiple services beyond its walls. These services include the Bookmobile and the Paletero Cart:

The Bookmobile

The Bookmobile works as a full service library, providing story time, a collection of books that can serve hundreds of students and staff that can assist with getting library cards and answer reference questions. It provides regular visits on Tuesdays and Thursdays to schools and organizations and will soon be expanding to provide services on Wednesday mornings. It can sometimes accommodate other days of the week. If you wish to book the bookmobile, please contact us a month before your event date. To inquire about scheduling a visit from our staff and bookmobile, please contact:

The Paletero Cart

The Salinas Public Library (SPL) strives to continually find innovative and community responsive methods to spread and grow learning throughout the entire community. The Paletero program was designed to model the paletero, “ice cream man,” business practice. Individually pushed carts sell ice cream, novelties and snacks. SPL has successfully replicated this popular method, but instead of selling ice cream, it lends tablets and books from its Paletero cart. It also offers new library cards. Additionally, staff inform community members about library programs and help answer reference questions. The cart and staff visit neighborhoods surrounding the Cesar Chavez library on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.

While Paletero means ice-cream, to the staff at Salinas Public Library it stands for: Providing, Access, Literacy and Education Through Engaging Residents Outside Library Walls.

If you would like to inquire about having the Paletero Cart and its staff attend a special event, please contact Don Gardner, Librarian: (831) 758-7419

Paletero Cart Schedule:
East Salinas 2:30 – 3:30 pm Tuesdays & Thursdays

Homebound Services Program

This program provides free delivery service of library materials to residents of the City of Salinas who have limited mobility and are physically unable to visit a Library facility. These are typically elderly people who are unable to drive or others who have a temporary or permanent physical illness/impairment.

Library card is required to receive this service. We will deliver books, magazines, music CDs, books on CD, and DVDs. The lending period for materials borrowed through this program is four (4) weeks with ability to renew once if there are no holds on the material. There is no late fee for library materials borrowed through Homebound delivery however, users are responsible for any loss or damages to library materials.

Before the first visit, Homebound Program staff will discuss your reading, listening and viewing preferences in order to plan future selections. Monthly visiting schedule will be determined after the initial visit.
