The Toy Lending Collection, which is housed only at the John Steinbeck Library, includes puzzles, games, educational, imaginative and active play toys.
Toys are checked out for three weeks and can be returned to any of the library locations. The collection is available during library hours. Patrons must have an adult library card for checking out toys. A toy lending agreement must also be on file. There is a maximum checkout of three toys per child at one time.
The library staff at the reference desks will be happy to help you with toy selections and check out.
The collection was developed originally by teachers at the Sherwood Adult School Parent Center, working with children, to assist them in building their basic learning skills, including small motor skills and hand-eye coordination. In 2009, the collection became available due to budget cuts by the State Department of Education, which required the elimination of certain programs. At that time, the Salinas Public Library and Sherwood agreed to transfer the toy collection to the John Steinbeck Library where they could be enjoyed by everyone.
