California of the Past

Thanks to a California State Library Grant (LSTA), the Salinas Public Library has launched its California of the Past Digital Storytelling Program. The library partnered with the United Farm Workers (UFW) to capture the stories of  farm workers in our community. A new digital storytelling station has been installed at the John Steinbeck Library Digital Arts Lab for the community to record, edit, and publish the stories of farm workers in the Salinas Valley. Each participant will receive a free DVD copy of their film along with a CD of digitized photographs and clippings they may choose to add to their films. The Salinas Public Library recognizes the struggles and triumphs of the hardest working hands in our community. It is our hope to capture these important stories to share with generations to come.

To see completed stories from our Salinas Community Members take a look at our films online hosted with blip.tv here.

Sample stories can be found online with the Media Arts Center located in San Diego .
