Families For Literacy
Families For Literacy
Services & resources for Literacy Program participants with children aged 0-18 at home.
- Once Upon a Thursday
- Family Reading Circle
- Special Events
- Kindle Program
Once Upon a Thursday is a monthly, themed, story and activity time for all the family. Parents will join in the fun and younger children enjoy crafts and educational activities related to the monthly theme. Teens can earn community service hours by working with their siblings.
Our Family Reading Circle is a fun-packed five-week program designed to inspire a love of reading & learning in the home. Caregivers share strategies around supporting their children's academic success, while their children enjoy a range of crafts, activities, games and in-class visits around four weekly themes. All families receive books to build their home libraries, and a Kindle Fire HD tablet!

Volunteer with the Literacy Program
Have you ever sent an email? Great! You can help! We are looking for friendly volunteers to support adults as they get online and learn about the digital world. We provide the materials, resources and instruction, you provide the support and enthusiasm our participants need to begin their journey. Classes are in-person and online throughout the week. This is a great opportunity for Service Learning or High School Community Service hours!
Do you want to build relationships and share your interests and skills? Our learner-centered one-on-one tutoring program needs passionate individuals who want to support adult learners as they strive to achieve their goals. Tutoring can cover any subject area, but our most common requests are for reading and writing assistance, high school equivalency support and help to improve English language skills. This opportunity is both in-person and online so don't let your zip code stop you for getting in touch!
Becoming a citizen is complicated - you can help! We offer in-person and online citizenship preparation classes in both English and Spanish. We provide all study materials, instruction and referrals to local agencies. You provide support to fellow members of the community in crossing the final hurdle to citizenship. This highly rewarding opportunity is appropriate to Service Learning or High School Community Service hours, as well as longer term volunteers.
Don't see anything you like? Don't worry! From supporting our Families for Literacy events and programs to helping out with administrative tasks in the office, we offer a variety of flexible volunteer opportunities. If you prefer occasional work, you can join our email list for special event support and volunteer to your own schedule. Bilingual (Spanish/English) volunteers are always appreciated, but this is not a requirement.
