There are young gamers in Salinas, and they came out to Sherwood Hall last Saturday to show off their talent and win prizes in our Super Smash Bros Ultimate Gaming Tournament. The event was part of the Library & Community Services Department's summer programming, and was attended by more than 130 youth and adults. The tournament gave away prizes for two different age categories, 11 and under, and 12 and up, and included a variety of other activities to keep youth busy such as giant board games, and classic video games.

"Kids and families had a blast," said Luis Manzo, Librarian II. "Many of the participants gave suggestions for next year's event too." This is the department's second official gaming tournament, and based on the popularity of these tournaments, there will be more. It's all a part of the department's effort to create safe spaces and opportunities for youth to engage in healthy activities, as well as meet their peers, and make new friends. Many of these gamers have been participating in the Library’s Summer Reading program as well as Recreation Center summer activities, and this tournament was part of our end-of-summer special events.
